Pet urns in Spokane, Washington

Spokane, Washington

What choosing an urn is like in Spokane

Spokane's freezing winters and dry summers are hard on some materials, so choose stone or metal for outdoor memorials. A tree planted over a biodegradable urn can work well, if you choose a species that handles cold and drought. Scattering ashes by the river or in the forest is something many consider; check the rules for that land first. Native pines or maples are common choices.

Spokane homes usually have yards, and many families like a memorial they can see: a stone under a pine, an engraved rock or a tree. Inside, an urn on a shelf or a framed paw print works well, and cremation jewelry suits people who want to keep a pet close. Consider where you'll be in a few years before choosing something permanent outdoors.

For something a crematory in Spokane doesn't stock, the drive to Spokane or another bigger place can be worth it, especially for stone, glass or a large-dog urn, where weight and finish matter. Call ahead with your pet's weight so they can set aside urns in the right size, and ask whether they'll ship the one you choose if it needs engraving first.

With roughly 230,783 residents, Spokane is the 2nd-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover.

Spokane sits within easy reach of Spokane Valley (9 miles), Post Falls (23 miles) and Coeur d'Alene (30 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Spokane; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

85,000

Spokane: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

230,783 ÷ 2.5 = 92,313 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 85,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

7,100

Estimated dog and cat losses in Spokane each year

How we calculated this

85,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 7,100 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation customs in Washington and your pet

With roughly 79.1%[5] of people in Washington cremated, the question locally isn't whether to keep ashes but how. That's where urn choice comes in. Many people here have inherited a relative's urn and have strong opinions about what they'd do differently: a smaller size, a lid that screws shut, a material that doesn't show dust. Those lessons apply just as well to a pet.

The Washington figure comes from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Seasons, scattering and delivery in Spokane

Ice and snow in January, February, March, November and December can make the drive to a crematory or pet cemetery slow and unpredictable. If you're collecting the ashes, or dropping off an urn for the crematory to fill, pick a clear day and call ahead. Nothing is lost by waiting a week; the ashes are kept safely until you can get there.

Winter storms slow deliveries, especially in the weeks around the holidays. If you're ordering an engraved urn in December, add a margin of a week or more to the seller's estimate. When a glass or glazed ceramic urn arrives after a cold journey, leave the box indoors for an hour or two before unpacking so the piece warms up gradually; sudden temperature changes can crack glass.

What pet urns cost in Spokane

Pet urns are a real part of what families spend after a loss: one industry report says they generate over 40% of pet memorial product revenue[6]. It's worth spending carefully rather than quickly. The ranges below come from national price guides and published crematory price lists; Spokane prices will usually fall inside them. Add delivery and engraving, then compare totals, not headline prices.

The full price table by product is on our Washington page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Where you can scatter or bury ashes in Washington

There are no rules about which urn you use or how long the ashes stay in their temporary container. Where local rules do apply is burial and scattering. As a general guide, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and waterways often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Washington level first; our Washington rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Spokane or your HOA adds anything.

From temporary container to urn

  1. Tell your child the ashes are coming home, describing them beforehand: a closed bag inside an ordinary tin or box.
  2. Let them help choose, from two or three urns you've already checked for size and price.
  3. Offer a small keepsake of their own for their room, while the main urn stays in a shared space.
  4. Invite them to add something, perhaps a picture they drew or a few words, slipped beneath the urn.
  5. Pick a lid that screws or locks shut, above all where a young child could reach the urn.
  6. Mark the day the urn arrives by doing something small as a family: a candle, a favorite memory shared out loud.

Ways to remember your pet at home

Spokane families often have relatives across the Inland Northwest and beyond, so sharing ashes among small keepsake urns or jewelry is common. There's no need to decide straight away. Bring ashes home in a simple container, talk with family about what each person would like, and choose lasting pieces when the first weeks have passed. A family call can help decide who keeps what.

Questions people ask

Roughly how many pets die in Spokane each year?

Our estimate is around 7,100. It comes from Spokane's population (about 230,783), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 85,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Spokane?

Usually yes. Spokane Valley is about 9 miles away, Post Falls is about 23 miles away and Coeur d'Alene is about 30 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Washington attitudes to cremation compare?

Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) puts the Washington human cremation rate at about 79.1%[5]. We show it on the Spokane page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Does the Spokane climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

How can I share my pet's ashes with family in other cities?

Most families set aside small shares before filling the main urn, then give each person a matching keepsake urn. Handing keepsakes over in person is simplest. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold, and our guide to primary urns versus keepsakes helps you decide which vessel does which job.

Can I take my pet's urn on a plane?

Usually yes, in your hand luggage, but the container needs to pass through airport X-ray screening. Dense metal or stone urns can be hard to screen, and in the US, security officers won't open a container of remains. Wood or a sturdy plastic temporary container is the safest choice for travel. Check your airline's rules too, especially for international flights.
