Cremation customs in France and your pet
About 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, and many families still think of a grave as the natural memorial. If that feels right for your pet too, you can have both: cremate, then bury the ashes in an urn in the garden or a pet cemetery, with a small marker on top. It's simpler and less costly than a full burial, and the grave can be dug at any time of year the ground allows.
We take the France rate from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Dijon, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for Bourgogne-Franche-Comte.

- Place it out of direct sun, well clear of radiators, somewhere steady and high enough that neither a child nor another pet can get to it.

How do France attitudes to cremation compare?
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) puts the France human cremation rate at about 44.91%[1]. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dijon?
Usually yes. Lyon is about 108 miles away and Reims is about 142 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is it safe to open the bag of pet ashes?
Yes. Cremated remains are dry, sterile bone fragments with no smell, and handling them carries no health risk. They're coarser and heavier than most people expect, a little like pale sand. If you do open the bag, work indoors over a tray, away from open windows and fans, and keep pets out of the room. Wash your hands afterwards, as you would after gardening.
Is it cheaper to buy a pet urn locally or online?
Online prices often look lower, but shipping, engraving and the risk of a breakage can close the gap. A crematory's counter price is convenient and the urn is sized to the ashes. How long does an engraved urn take to arrive in Dijon?
It depends on the seller and the work involved. Simple laser engraving on wood or brass can be quick, while photo engraving, hand-painted figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks. One Australian crematory, for example, quotes about two weeks for a laser-engraved metal urn[8]. Always ask for the making time and the shipping time separately, then add a margin if a date matters.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?
