Pet Urns in Seoul

Seoul, South Korea

Pet Urns in Seoul: what to know

Across Seoul, one question comes up more often than price or material: what to do when people in the family want different things. One wants the ashes at home, another wants them scattered, a third wants a pendant. The answer is usually all three. Keep the shares small, write down who has what and choose the main urn last.

In Seoul, as elsewhere, the urn is often the memorial families keep longest, sometimes for decades. That's a good reason not to rush it. Choose a material you'll still like in ten years, a lid that closes securely and a size close to the ashes you have. If you'd like a second opinion, send us your pet's details and we'll email some options.

Cremation in Seoul, and what it means for urns

In Seoul, about 92.43%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already have a view on urns: whether they like them on display, prefer to scatter, or split the difference. Pet owners here often do the same thing they'd do for a person, keeping a main urn at home and a little in a keepsake or two. It's a practical, unfussy approach, and there's no wrong version of it.

That Seoul rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.

Urn prices by material, and what adds to them

Plenty of households in Seoul pay for two containers rather than one: a niche-sized urn for a columbarium and a small keepsake for the home altar. Budget for both from the start. We don't have local price lists to cite, so as a relative guide only: in the US, photo urns cost $40–$150[2] and keepsake or mini urns $15–$60[3]. Ask your crematorium whether a matching pair is sold together.

Published pet urn prices in Asia are hard to find, so we won't invent a local range for Seoul. Many families here keep ashes in a columbarium niche instead of, or as well as, an urn at home. At one Singapore pet columbarium, niches start at SGD 300 for the first year with SGD 180 yearly renewal[4]. The niche size limits the urn, so check its dimensions before you buy.

Pet ashes and the law in Seoul

If you rent in Seoul, burying an urn in the yard needs your landlord's agreement, and homeowners' associations can have their own rules. Scattering on public land is usually tolerated when done discreetly, but it isn't always permitted. The notes below cover the basics for Seoul; your city or county has the final word.

From temporary container to urn

  1. Give yourself a week or two, then choose; design decisions come more easily once the earliest days have passed.
  2. Picture where the urn will sit, then measure the space: shelf depth, height under a cabinet, width on a mantelpiece.
  3. Estimate the ashes. Roughly 3-5% of body weight[9] comes back as cremated remains; for a figure based on your own pet, try the ashes weight estimator.
  4. Decide on personalization, whether dates and a name, a photo, a paw impression or a plain surface.
  5. Order the main urn and any keepsakes together, then each piece shares one finish.
  6. Transfer the ashes over a tray, windows shut and no draft, and only if the bag really won't pass through the opening.
  7. Keep the crematory's certificate or label with the urn, tucked underneath or in a drawer nearby.

Remembering your pet, in Seoul and beyond

If you'd like part of your pet's ashes outdoors, a quiet corner of your own garden, a favorite walking route (with permission where needed) or a pet cemetery are the usual choices around Seoul. Keeping most of the ashes in an urn at home while scattering a little means you never have to choose between the two.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

What size urn does my pet need?

Allow about one cubic inch of urn space for every pound of your pet's healthy weight, plus about 10% to close the lid comfortably. A 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches; a 70 lb dog about 70[10]. The urn size calculator works it out in cubic inches and millilitres.

Do I need permission to keep my pet's ashes at home in Seoul?

No permission is needed to keep a pet's ashes indoors, and there's no time limit on how long they stay there. Permission only becomes a question if you want to scatter or bury them somewhere you don't own, like public parkland, a shoreline or a cemetery, where the landowner or managing authority decides.

Which places in Seoul have the widest choice of pet urns?

Usually the largest cities, such as Seoul and Gangnam, where crematories keep display ranges and independent makers and engravers are easier to find. Smaller towns rely more on the vet clinic's catalog and on delivery from online shops. If you'd like to see urns in person, a trip to the nearest large city can be worth it for stone or glass.

How much does a pet urn cost in Seoul?

Prices depend on material, size and personalization, and local price lists vary. Where we have sourced figures, they're on each city page; for example, one UK crematorium lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[11]. Ask any seller for a written price that includes engraving and delivery.

Can an urn be buried in a pet cemetery in Seoul?

Many pet cemeteries accept urns, and burying ashes usually costs far less than a full burial, since the plot can be smaller. Some cemeteries ask for a particular type of urn or vault, and many charge yearly upkeep. Ask about both before buying, and choose a durable or biodegradable urn to suit their rules.

How long does an engraved pet urn take to arrive in Seoul?

It depends on the seller and the work. Simple laser engraving can be quick; photo engraving, figurines and custom ceramics can take several weeks, and deliveries to rural areas take longer. Ask for the making and shipping times separately and add a margin if a date matters.
