Gangnam, Seoul
How Gangnam families shop for a pet urn
Korean pet funerals often end with a choice of memorial: an urn placed in a pet columbarium, ashes kept at home, or ashes turned into small, glossy memorial beads, sometimes called memorial stones, that sit in a dish or jar. Others choose jewelry with a trace of ash or a framed paw print. In a Gangnam apartment, compact memorials that fit a shelf or display cabinet are by far the most practical.
Many Korean families mark Chuseok and Seollal with ancestral rites, and some extend a similar care to a pet: a photo on a shelf with a small offering of a favorite treat, or a visit to the columbarium over the holiday. Others prefer something modern and discreet, like memorial beads in a glass jar or a slim pendant worn to work. Neither is more respectful. Choose what fits the way your family remembers.
Big-city crematories often run more than one location and share a catalog, so the urn you saw at one branch may be kept at another. If you've fallen for a particular piece in Gangnam, ask the staff to check stock before you drive across town, and ask them to hold it for you. It saves a wasted trip on a hard day.
With roughly 561,000 residents, Gangnam is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Seoul communities we cover.
Families in Gangnam often end up using a provider from Seoul (5 miles, a larger centre), Incheon (18 miles, a larger centre) and Daejeon (82 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
With cremation at roughly 92.43%[1] in South Korea, many families here have already scattered a relative somewhere meaningful. That experience often shapes what they do for a pet: part of the ashes kept indoors, the rest returned to a beach, a trail or a garden. If that's your plan, buy the urn after the scattering, so it's sized for what's left.
We take the South Korea rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Gangnam, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and damp: materials for Gangnam
If you'd like an outdoor memorial in Gangnam and aren't sure how the seasons will treat it, pick the least fussy option: bury the ashes in a biodegradable urn and mark the place with a flat stone. There's nothing above ground to fade, crack or blow over, and you can add plants around it as you learn how that spot behaves through the year.

What families in Gangnam typically pay for an urn
In much of Asia, small apartments shape the urn choice more than price does. A compact urn or a keepsake on a home altar is common, and many pet crematoria sell urns designed for columbarium niches. We don't yet have sourced local urn prices, so the table shows US material prices for relative comparison: marble costs about three times as much as ceramic[5].
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Seoul: Seoul costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Scattering and burial rules in Seoul
Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for Seoul follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Ask what came with the cremation. Many packages include a basic urn, and some let you upgrade for the difference.
- Check how the ashes came back. Usually it's a closed bag sitting in a tin or cardboard box; measure that first, since any urn has to hold it.
- Shortlist two or three urns with capacity listed in cubic inches or litres, not just 'small' or 'large'.
- Ask each seller for making time and shipping time separately, especially if a date matters.
- Unpack the urn the day it arrives and report any damage straight away.
- Place it out of direct sun, well clear of radiators, somewhere steady and high enough that neither a child nor another pet can get to it.
Keepsakes, displays and living memorials
Many pet funeral facilities around Seoul include a columbarium with glass-fronted niches where families place an urn with photos and small objects. Families visit on anniversaries and holidays, much as they would for relatives. If you want that, ask about fees and how long a niche is held. If you would rather keep ashes at home, a compact urn or keepsake works well.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Gangnam?
The closest communities we cover are Seoul (about 5 miles), Incheon (about 18 miles) and Daejeon (about 82 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Gangnam too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do South Korea attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the South Korea human cremation rate at about 92.43%[1]. We show it on the Gangnam page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is it cheaper to buy a pet urn locally or online?
Online prices often look lower, but shipping, engraving and the risk of a breakage can close the gap. A crematory's counter price is convenient and the urn is sized to the ashes. Compare the total delivered price of the exact urn you want, engraved, rather than headline prices. The memorial budget planner helps you add it up.
Can I bury my pet's urn in my yard in Seoul?
Burying ashes on land you own is generally allowed, and it's much simpler than burying a body. If you rent, ask your landlord; if you're in a homeowners' association, check its rules. A biodegradable urn returns to the soil; a sealed wooden or metal urn lasts much longer. If you might move, consider keeping a small portion indoors in a keepsake.
What size urn does my dog or cat need?
The usual rule is one cubic inch of urn space for every pound your pet weighed when healthy. By that rule, a 12 lb cat needs about 12 cubic inches and a 70 lb dog about 70[7]. Add about 10% for room to close the lid. The urn size calculator works it out for you.
Where in the house should a pet urn go?
A shelf in a room you use daily, shaded from strong sunlight, with no radiator, heater or steamy kitchen or bathroom close by. Put it high enough that pets and small children can't knock it down, on a surface that doesn't wobble. Many families choose a spot they pass every day; others prefer somewhere private, like a bedroom. Either is right if it feels right to you.
