Keeping ashes at home: the local attitude
Cremation is the usual choice in South Korea: about 92.43%[1] of people there are cremated. When cremation is this familiar, keeping ashes at home isn't unusual, and most people have seen an urn on a relative's shelf. That tends to carry over to pets. Families here rarely feel they need to explain why their dog's or cat's ashes live in the living room, and local crematories are used to selling urns alongside the cremation.

Nobody needs a permit to keep an urn on a shelf. Permission only comes into it once part of the ashes goes somewhere shared, such as a park, a beach, a river or a cemetery. Before any of that, find out who looks after the place you have in mind, since the answer usually comes from them rather than from a single law. The general picture for South Korea is below.
Step by step in Seoul
- Tell your child the ashes are coming home and what they'll look like: a sealed bag in a plain box or tin.
- Let them help choose, from two or three urns you've already checked for size and price.
- Offer a small keepsake of their own to keep in their bedroom, with the main urn living somewhere the whole family uses.
- Invite them to add something, perhaps a picture they drew or a few words, slipped beneath the urn.
- Pick a lid that screws or locks shut, especially if the urn will sit within reach of small hands.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Seoul?
Usually yes. Gangnam is about 5 miles away, Incheon is about 17 miles away and Daejeon is about 87 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Seoul page quote a human cremation rate?

How can I share my pet's ashes with family in other cities?

Do I have to buy an urn right away?
No. After a private cremation, the ashes come back in a sealed temporary container, usually a bag inside a box or tin, and they're safe in it indefinitely. Many families in Seoul wait a few weeks, or even months, before choosing an urn. Waiting often leads to a better choice, because the first days after a loss aren't the easiest time for design decisions.
Can two pets share one urn?
Yes. Companion urns are made to hold two sets of ashes, sometimes in separate compartments. Many families prefer matching single urns instead, because pets rarely die at the same time and a companion urn can sit half empty for years. If you do choose a shared urn, size it for both pets' combined weight.
How do I stop a delivered urn from going missing in my building?
Ask the seller to require a signature, have it sent to your workplace or choose a local pickup point. If your building has a package room, let the front desk know a fragile item is coming. Open the box the same day and report any damage straight away, since most sellers set a short window for claims.
