Reading, England
What choosing an urn is like in Reading
Reading terraces usually have small gardens, and many residents live in flats. That makes compact memorials practical: a small urn on a mantelpiece, a framed paw print or a piece of jewellery holding a little ash. A slim stone or plaque can fit a small garden or a planter. If you rent or might move, choose something portable. In a shady back yard, a memorial pot planted with ferns or hellebores can still thrive.
Reading has many residents with family spread across the UK and abroad, so sharing ashes is a common wish. Small keepsake urns or jewellery let several people keep something. There's no rush to choose. Bring the ashes home in a simple container, talk as a family about what everyone would like, and decide on lasting pieces when you're ready. A family video call can help settle the details.
In a place the size of Reading, you'll usually find one or two pet crematories and a handful of vet clinics that return ashes, each with a small range of urns. That covers the basics well: wooden boxes, ceramic jars and a few metal designs. For marble, sculpted figurines or photo urns, most families here order online or look to a larger centre such as London, where specialist makers are more common.
Reading is home to about 232,000 people, the 17th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is London, about 37 miles (59 km) away, which is where some providers serving Reading are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Windsor (16 miles), Guildford (23 miles) and Oxford (24 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
With cremation at roughly 83.0%[5] in England, many families here have already scattered a relative somewhere meaningful. That experience often shapes what they do for a pet: part of the ashes kept indoors, the rest returned to a beach, a trail or a garden. If that's your plan, buy the urn after the scattering, so it's sized for what's left.
We take the England rate from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Reading, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Keeping an urn safe through Reading's seasons
If you plan to bury or scatter the ashes, the season in Reading decides when, not whether. Frozen or waterlogged ground can wait; the ashes are safe indoors in the meantime. Many families find a spring or autumn date, when the weather is kind and people can gather without rushing, and keep a small keepsake back for those who can't come.

What pet urns cost in Reading
UK pet crematoria publish casket and urn prices more often than you might expect. One provider lists pet ashes caskets at £61–£151[6] including VAT, from a bamboo box to a cast-resin breed figure. A crematorium serving Reading will usually offer a similar range with its individual cremation service, and you're free to buy elsewhere and keep the ashes in the standard container until your urn arrives.

Rules worth knowing before you scatter or bury
Water is the place families ask about most. Scattering on a lake, a river or the sea feels natural to many people, but local authorities and park managers can have their own requirements, and some ask that only water-soluble urns are used. The general notes for England follow; whoever manages that stretch of water has the final say.
In the UK, you can keep your pet's ashes at home, scatter them on your own land or bury them in a pet cemetery. Scattering on someone else's land needs the landowner's permission. Urns and caskets here are often sized in litres or millilitres, and Royal Mail lists ashes among its prohibited items, so most families hand-deliver keepsakes or use a specialist courier.
The England page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Reading's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A simple plan for the urn decision
- Give yourself a week or two, then choose; design decisions come more easily once the earliest days have passed.
- Picture where the urn will sit, and take a tape measure to it: depth of shelf, clearance under a cupboard, room on the mantel.
- Estimate the ashes. Cremated remains weigh about 3-5% of body weight[8]; the ashes weight estimator gives a quick figure.
- Decide on personalization, whether dates and a name, a photo, a paw impression or a plain surface.
- Order the main urn and any keepsakes together so the finishes match.
- Transfer the ashes over a tray, windows shut and no draft, and only if the bag really won't pass through the opening.
- Keep the crematory's certificate or label close by, slipped under the base or filed in a drawer in the same room.
Keeping your pet close in Reading
The Thames and the Kennet run through Reading, and some families want a memorial connected to the river. Water-soluble urns are made for release on water, and a biodegradable urn can nourish a tree planted in a garden. If you plan to scatter ashes in a park or along the towpath, check with the landowner first and choose a quiet time.

Questions people ask
How do England attitudes to cremation compare?
Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) puts the England human cremation rate at about 83.0%[5]. We show it on the Reading page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Roughly how many pets die in Reading each year?
Our estimate is around 5,700. It comes from Reading's population (about 232,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 69,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Reading actually based?
Some are local, and some run from London, about 37 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Reading and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Reading?
Usually yes. Windsor is about 16 miles away, Guildford is about 23 miles away and Oxford is about 24 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How can I share my pet's ashes with family in other cities?
Most families set aside small shares before filling the main urn, then give each person a matching keepsake urn. Handing keepsakes over in person is simplest. The ashes sharing planner shows how much each share can hold, and our guide to primary urns versus keepsakes helps you decide which vessel does which job.
How much does a pet urn cost in Reading?
UK pet crematoria usually sell caskets alongside the cremation; one provider lists them at £61–£151[6] including VAT, from bamboo to cast resin. Specialist and commissioned urns cost more. If you'd rather bury the ashes, one Sussex pet cemetery charges £60–£145[9]. Ask any seller for the capacity in millilitres or litres.
