Pet urns in Windsor: the local picture
The Long Walk, running nearly three miles from the castle into Windsor Great Park, and the Thames riverside are places many local people connect with memories. If you want to scatter ashes, remember that the park and much of the land here is managed with its own rules, so check first. Keeping a little ash back gives you a keepsake to hold on to.
Riverside Windsor gardens tend to be damp and shaded, and moss creeps over porous stone within a few winters. Polished granite or slate keeps an inscription crisp, and a sheltered corner near the house protects it further. A rose, a small tree or a bed of spring bulbs planted with ashes can become a living memorial for households planning to stay. Families in rented flats near the centre may prefer a planter they can take with them.
In a close community like Windsor, a pet's death is often noticed by neighbors, church friends and the people at the feed store. Some families choose an urn with that in mind, something that can sit in a front room where visitors will see it, rather than tucked away. Others want a private keepsake that only they understand. Both are right, and neither needs to be expensive.
With roughly 32,000 residents, Windsor is the 32nd-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Reading, about 16 miles (25 km) away, which is where some providers serving Windsor are based.
For a second opinion on price, Richmond (13 miles), Reading (16 miles, a larger centre) and Guildford (17 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Windsor routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
9,600
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Windsor
How we calculated this
32,000 ÷ 2.4 = 13,333 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 9,600. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
780
Windsor families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
9,600 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 780 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Local cremation habits and the urn question
When cremation covers around 83.0%[5] of deaths, as it does in England, ashes stop being an awkward subject at the dinner table. That openness helps with a pet. Relatives are more likely to ask for a small share, and friends may already know a potter or an engraver. Tell people you're choosing an urn; the most useful leads often come from someone who did it recently.
The England percentage above is from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Windsor, not as a count of pets.
Seasons, scattering and delivery in Windsor
If you plan to bury or scatter the ashes, the season in Windsor decides when, not whether. Frozen or waterlogged ground can wait; the ashes are safe indoors in the meantime. Many families find a spring or autumn date, when the weather is kind and people can gather without rushing, and keep a small keepsake back for those who can't come.

What pet urns cost in Windsor
If you're in Windsor and weighing a glass keepsake instead of a second urn, UK studios price them clearly: one charges £170[6] for a pet-ashes glass pendant. Caskets from a crematorium run £61–£151[7] at one provider. Together they cover what most families need: a main casket for home and a small piece for whoever wants to carry a part of their pet.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for England: England costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What England allows with pet ashes
Keeping a pet's ashes at home in an urn is allowed almost everywhere, and you don't need anyone's permission. The rules come in when the ashes leave the house: scattering in public places, burying an urn in a garden or sending ashes by post. Here's the basic picture for England.
In the UK, you can keep your pet's ashes at home, scatter them on your own land or bury them in a pet cemetery. Scattering on someone else's land needs the landowner's permission. Urns and caskets here are often sized in litres or millilitres, and Royal Mail lists ashes among its prohibited items, so most families hand-deliver keepsakes or use a specialist courier.
The England page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Windsor's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
From temporary container to urn
- Leave the temporary container sealed until the urn has arrived and you've checked it.
- Read how the urn opens. Many wooden urns open from the base with small screws; many metal ones have a threaded lid.
- Lay out a towel or tray across a table, with a funnel or spoon within reach should the bag need decanting.
- Place the sealed bag inside with its top folded down; cut it open only if it truly can't go in.
- Close and secure the urn; a small dab of adhesive on a threaded lid stops curious hands and paws.
- Recycle or keep the temporary box; some families keep it with the certificate as part of the record.
Keeping your pet close in Windsor
Windsor is a town where ceremony and history are woven into ordinary days, and many families lean toward memorials with a sense of dignity: an engraved slate plaque, a polished wooden casket, or a small ring or locket that carries a pinch of ash. In a terraced house or flat, something for the mantel or windowsill often works better than a piece meant for the garden.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Windsor?
The closest communities we cover are Richmond (about 13 miles), Reading (about 16 miles) and Guildford (about 17 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Windsor too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Roughly how many pets die in Windsor each year?
Our estimate is around 780. It comes from Windsor's population (about 32,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 9,600 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Windsor actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Reading, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Windsor and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Windsor page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) reports about 83.0%[5] of England residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How do I make sure the engraving is right?
Ask for a written or digital proof before anything is engraved, and check the spelling of your pet's name, the dates and any line breaks. Have someone else read it too. Engraving can't be undone. Our guide to engraving and photo urn lead times explains what to check at each step.
How many families in Windsor end up choosing a pet urn?
We can't count urns, but we can estimate the need. By our estimate, about 9,600 Windsor households have a dog or cat, and roughly 780 of those pets die each year. Many are cremated with ashes returned, and in national research on human cremation, 37%[9] of people said they'd keep ashes at home in an urn.
